There’s a bit of Tigermania happening on eBay right now and for good reason. Tiger is dominating the entire world of golf. He couldn’t make a putt at the Masters and still finished second to Trevor Immelman. If any other PGA tour player couldn’t sink a putt for the week and played poorly, they’d be going home on Friday afternoon.
All of this is no excuse for you to pay double or triple of what a card is really worth when there are a plethora of high-grade examples in circulation. A prime example is the 10 plus 2001 Upper Deck Golf Tiger Woods (Promo) PSA MINT 9 cards that are currently up for auction on eBay this week. Out of the 836 of these cards submitted to PSA for grading, 506 of them (60.5%) are MINT 9’s. That doesn’t sound too rare to me. Another indication that this card is a little inflated is that the same seller is selling almost all of these cards at all different, insane Buy It Now prices that range from $200-$500. If one person can get their hands on this many of them, then they’re not rare. There is also an auction card that is at $50 with a day and a half to go. This one will probably go into the $100 range, which is what I would pay for a PSA GEM MT 10, since that is also not that rare (226/836 = 27%).
I would also steer clear of Tiger’s 2001 U.D. Heroes of Golf #1TW Tiger Woods (2001 National Promo) PSA MINT 9 & PSA GEM MT 10 cards. According to the PSA Population Report 40.4 % (303/750) are PSA MINT 9’s
and 41% (308/750) are PSA GEM MT 10’s. Again, the same seller is trying to sell these cards at high Buy It Now prices.
In my opinion, I would wait until these cards come down in price a little bit, but I am not denying that they are important cards to have if you’re a Tiger Woods collector. In the meantime, try and look on eBay for these cards ungraded and then send them out to PSA yourself, or focus on some cheaper alternatives such as his 2001 Upper Deck Tiger Tales cards that aren’t as sensitive to the Tiger Woods domination occurring right now. These Tiger tales were placed into every 5-pack of cards so they are very common, but collecting a whole set of these (only 30 cards) in PSA MINT 9 or PSA GEM MT 10 condition is worth a lot of money.
Happy Collecting
